Why Audio Conversion Happens in the Browser Now§
A few years ago, audio conversion meant downloading software: VLC, Audacity, FFmpeg via command line, or a sketchy installer. Then cloud converters became popular — but they require uploading your audio files to a random server, which is slow, has file size limits, and raises obvious privacy concerns for personal recordings.
WebAssembly changed this entirely.

Choosing the Right Output Format§
The right format depends on what you're doing with the audio:
For sharing and streaming → MP3§
MP3 plays everywhere: every smartphone, car stereo, streaming service, and audio player supports it. Use 192kbps for a good balance of quality and file size. Use 320kbps if audio quality is critical.
For professional editing → WAV or AIFF§
Digital audio workstations (Ableton, Pro Tools, Logic, FL Studio) prefer uncompressed formats. Export to WAV before importing into a DAW to avoid double-compression artifacts.
For archiving losslessly → FLAC§
If you're ripping a CD or archiving live recordings, FLAC gives you lossless quality in about half the file size of WAV. It's supported by most modern players.
For web audio → OGG or OPUS§
OGG Vorbis is natively supported by all browsers via the <audio> element without plugins. OPUS is more efficient and is the standard codec for WebRTC audio. Both avoid MP3 royalty concerns.
For iPhone/iPad ringtones → M4R (AAC renamed)§
Apple's ringtone format is simply a 30-second or less M4A file renamed to .m4r. Convert your audio to M4A, trim to 30 seconds or less, then rename.
Lossy vs. Lossless: What Actually Happens to Your Audio§
Lossless formats (WAV, FLAC, AIFF)§
These preserve the exact digital audio data. A FLAC file decoded to WAV will be bit-for-bit identical to the original PCM. No audio quality is lost regardless of how many times you re-encode between lossless formats.
Lossy formats (MP3, AAC, OGG, OPUS)§
Lossy codecs use psychoacoustic models to throw away audio information the human ear supposedly won't notice — high frequencies, quiet sounds masked by loud ones, spatial detail. Each encode permanently removes some data.
Critical rule: Never convert from one lossy format to another.
Converting MP3 → OGG → MP3 compounds the quality loss from each encode. The original MP3 already has certain frequencies removed; re-encoding to OGG removes more, then converting back to MP3 removes more still. The result sounds noticeably worse than the original.
Always convert from the highest quality source available — ideally lossless (WAV, FLAC) → lossy (MP3, AAC, OGG).
Audio Bitrate: What the Numbers Mean§
Bitrate is the amount of data per second in a lossy audio file:

"Transparent" means most people cannot distinguish the compressed version from the original in a blind listening test. 256–320 kbps MP3 is considered transparent for typical listening environments.
FFmpeg WASM: How It Works in the Browser§
FFmpeg is an open-source multimedia framework written in C that handles virtually every audio and video format. The WebAssembly build (@ffmpeg/ffmpeg) compiles this C code to run in the browser's JavaScript engine.
When you convert a file:
- The browser loads a ~30MB FFmpeg WASM binary (cached after first load)
- Your audio file is passed to the WASM module via
SharedArrayBuffer - FFmpeg processes the conversion in a Web Worker (off the main thread, so the UI stays responsive)
- The output file bytes are returned to the browser
- A download is triggered
This is the same FFmpeg used by professional audio engineers, TV broadcasters, and major streaming platforms — running entirely in your browser tab.
Privacy: Your Audio Files Never Leave Your Device§
